After minor success as an opera singer, William H. Weisman turned to landscape painting, studying at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He worked in Philadelphia and Detroit before moving to Franconia, NH in 1878. There, he settled near Weisman Brook—named for the artist—where he painted views of the White Mountains and New England scenery. He also created a number of seascapes during trips to Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Weisman exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Annual of 1876 and the National Academy of Design in 1877. In later life Weisman took up photography and did many White Mountain photographs.
In 1890 the White Mountain Echo, a weekly newspaper, reported: "Mr. W. H. Weisman, the artist, has again opened his White Mountain studio in Franconia. A fine collection of his paintings of the mountains and New England scenery, all sizes, at very moderate prices. An invitation is extended to all. Open every day."
