Lewis Fischer was a German fresco painter who immigrated to the United States sometime before 1850, according to census records. He settled initially in Boston, where he was employed to paint frescoes in some of the large mansions in and around the greater Boston area. He eventually travelled throughout the northeast, painting landscapes in the style of the Hudson River School. The interplay of a dark, brooding sky pierced with a shaft of light is a characteristic attribute in his landscapes. He is listed in the 1957 edition of The New York Historical Society’s Dictionary of Artists in America 1564-1860; Yale University Press, New Haven, Connecticut.
