George Thompson Pritchard was born in Havelock, New Zealand on April 11, 1878. He studied in at the Aukland Academy of Art, the Elam School of Art, and the Melbourne Academy of Fine Arts (1901). Upon arriving in San Francisco in 1906 in the aftermath of the earthquake and fire, he produced many paintings during his three-year stay there. He spent a few years in Milwaukee before journeying to Paris for further art study at L'Académie Julien, and at the Vanderheldt Academy in Amsterdam (1911-14). During World War I he lived in Canada, New York City, and Richmond, VA. Pritchard lectured and exhibited at colleges and universities throughout the American South. In 1935 he settled in southern California, where he maintained studios in Glendale and Santa Monica. He taught art at his studio and exhibited regularly with local art associations, painting both landscapes and seascapes. Pritchard died in Reseda, CA on February 26, 1962. His works hang in the Museum in Springville, Utah, at Gardena High School, and at the Roberts Gallery in Pomona.
