Horace P. Giles was born in Mississippi in December 1850. He had a studio in Boston from 1873-1910 except in 1876 when he was in San Francisco working as a fresco painter. He was a crayon portraitist, muralist, and scenic painter of backgrounds. His portrait of Nathaniel Smith Folsom (1806-1890) hangs in the collection at Dartmouth College.
He was living in Merrimac, Massachusetts in 1920 and 1930. He is believed to have died there in the 1930s. His rare works include frescoes, portraits, and landscapes.
