Born in Woodstock, Vermont, Frederick Jonas Wilder was the son of Arthur B. Wilder, who was himself an avid Vermont artist and manager of the Woodstock Inn for over 35 years.  Frederick Wilder got his undergraduate degree from Harvard, and later graduated from the architectural school there.  Throughout his life he painted and travelled to Europe alongside his father. He painted chiefly in oils, and earned first prize in 1944 for a painting he titled “Across the Valley". Frederick Wilder was a member of the Wellesley Society of Painters and Portland Haylofters.
